You always hear how important it is to get all the vitamins your body needs to function. But what are vitamins? And what types of food should we eat to get them? Vitamins are substances that help a human body to function properly. They fall into two categories: water-soluble and fat-soluble. Water-soluble vitamins need to dissolve in order to be absorbed by your body while fat-soluble vitamins require fat to be dissolved and stored in the body. Because your body is incapable of storing water-soluble vitamins, your body needs a daily intake of water-soluble vitamins such as vitamin C and vitamin B. Vitamins help cells and organs function, support normal growth and development, and boost the immune system. Many different foods have all the vitamins and minerals your body needs, so knowing which ones to eat and when to eat them is essential.

Vegetarians and vegans also need to pay close attention to their diets to ensure they are getting the correct amount of vitamins. Vitamin B12, for example, is found primarily in animal products. You can find vitamin B12 in dairy, but this isn’t a viable option for vegans. Therefore, it is important to talk to your doctor about obtaining a vitamin B12 supplement. Turnip greens are becoming more popular because they contain folate, which lowers the blood levels of homocysteine. Olives are another terrific source of vitamin E. While they are high in sodium, they can help fight inflammation and promote strong heart health. Lastly, oysters are an excellent source of vitamin D and vitamin B12. Oysters also contain high levels of zinc, which is essential to healthy sperm production, smooth skin, low stress levels, and digestion.
