Avoid Processed Foods

In recent years, the health risks associated with processed foods have been exposed. It is important to know exactly what processed foods are in order to understand which foods to avoid. Almost all food we eat is processed in some way. There is a big difference between chemical processing and mechanical processing, though. If there are no added chemicals, then the processing procedure does not affect the makeup of the food. Foods that have been chemically processed, however, are more generally referred to as processed foods. These foods can be detrimental to a person’s health and may contribute to obesity, heart troubles, and even death.

Why are they bad for health?

You should avoid processed foods whenever possible. Almost all processed foods are loaded with refined sugar, which is not an essential nutrient.

Sugar can have devastating effects on your metabolism, and can eventually lead to increased fat accumulation in the liver, increased levels of the harmful cholesterol, high triglycerides, and insulin resistance. Sugar is also associated with cancer, obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, some of the world’s leading diet-related diseases. Processed foods may also lead to overconsumption. Our appetites tend to gravitate towards food that is fatty, salty, or sweet. Many processed foods have been engineered to cause overeating. Processed foods contain many artificial ingredients, most of which aren’t actually food, but are chemicals that are added for taste or preservation. It is possible to become addicted to processed foods, because they activate the brain’s reward system. This is one of the main reasons why people find it so difficult to stop eating these foods, no matter how hard they try. We should stop eating these foods because most do not provide our bodies with essential nutrients. Some processed foods do have synthetic nutrients, but even these are not a good replacement for the nutrients found in whole foods. The more processed foods you eat, the less antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins your body is taking in.

While eliminating processed foods from your diet may seem difficult at first, there are numerous replacement options that are equally as tasty and will help you to become healthier. Instead of drinking concentrated juice, try eating fruit (or making fruit into a smoothie). Many supposed fruit juices have added chemicals or an abundance of sugar. You should also try to eliminate all potato chips from your diet. Try lightly crisped potatoes instead. They are a much healthier option than chips from vacuum sealed plastic bags. If you are a big rice eater, try eating brown rice instead of white rice. Although white rice is not terrible, it is a refined carbohydrate and can raise your blood pressure. Brown rice is a much better alternative because it is left intact with fiber and germ. Lastly, drink water instead of soda. Soda is a processed drink that can destroy your body. Water, on the other hand, helps to maintain your body’s balance of fluids.
